Steps

I made Steps from antique Japanese books I’ve been collecting over time. I’ve always loved the covers, especially the different shades of faded blue and teal. The writing and small marks on them draw me in, and I’m always especially happy when I find one with a drawing. In this piece, there’s a Japanese face peeking out from the lower left side.

When I was young, I used to draw and write in my own books. Working with these covers, I think about the people who held them before me. I imagine them adding their own marks, just like I did.

The pages are made from washi paper. It’s very strong, almost like fabric, which helps in layering and building them into this form.

Steps measures 26.5" x 44" and was made in 2024.
