Undertone

Undertone is made from antique Japanese indigo cotton furoshiki fabric. What makes it especially interesting to me is the original same-color sashiko stitching, with a fan on one side and geometric diamond shapes on the other. I added patches and a couple of small areas of sashiko stitching of my own.

The cover itself measures 10.5" high × 22" wide. With the 14" × 26" feather insert, it settles into a depth of about 5". The insert has a cotton cover and 100% feather fill.

I backed the antique fabric with new heavyweight cotton canvas for reinforcement and finished the inside edges with overlocking stitches for durability.

There are also slight areas of discoloration in the fabric that reflect its age and history.

Scripted is made from beautifully faded antique Japanese tsutsugaki fabric from the early 1900s. What gives this piece its character is the Japanese script across the surface.
