Into the Blue
Into the Blue came together in my Brooklyn studio from antique Japanese cotton fabrics dating to the late 1800s and early 1900s, including katazome resist-dyed indigo and bengala iron oxide-dyed cloth.
One side carries a repeating hawk pattern that I had never come across before. The other is a lighter blue indigo fabric with a large patch of the same hawk textile. I added the sashiko-style embellishment myself.
In all my years of collecting, I had never found anything quite like these fabrics. The light blue indigo and iron oxide dye, along with the hawk katazome, felt especially rare.
With the insert, the pillow measures 17" high × 17" wide. It comes with the 20" × 20" insert shown, which has a cotton cover and 100% feather fill.
I backed the antique fabric with new heavyweight cotton canvas for reinforcement, finished the inside edges with overlocking stitches for durability, and added a zippered closure.
