Daydream
Daydream came together in my Brooklyn studio from antique Japanese katazome indigo-dyed cotton fabric dating to the late 1800s and early 1900s.
It uses mum katazome on both sides, with a repeating chrysanthemum pattern throughout. On one side, I added a patch of a different mum fabric along with a zanshi patch, woven from remnant threads. In Japanese culture, mums are associated with rejuvenation and longevity.
The cover itself measures 11" high × 17" wide. I paired it with a 12" × 21" insert, which gives it a fuller shape. The insert has a cotton cover with 65% polyester and 35% cotton fill.
I backed the antique fabric with new heavyweight cotton canvas for reinforcement, finished the inside edges with overlocking stitches for durability, and added a zippered closure.
