Windswept

Windswept

Windswept stretches out in a long lumbar form, using beautifully distressed antique Japanese fabric from the late 1800s and early 1900s. One side carries a mum katazome pattern in indigo and safflower dye. The other is antique safflower-dyed fabric with patches. In Japanese culture, mums are associated with longevity and rejuvenation.

On the safflower side, there is one small hand-repaired area with sashiko stitching and two patches.

With the insert, it measures 11" high × 32" wide. The cover on its own is the same size, and I pair it with a 14" × 36" insert with a 100% cotton cover and 100% polyester fill.

I backed the antique exterior fabric with new heavyweight cotton canvas for reinforcement, finished the inside edges with overlocking stitches for durability, and hid the zipper in the seam so it can be removed easily when needed.
