Seasoned

Seasoned leans into the chrysanthemum pattern in a way I really like. It’s made from beautifully faded antique Japanese indigo katazome fabric, and I patched it with another chrysanthemum pattern that sits naturally with the original cloth.

On one side, there’s also a hand-sewn plaid zanshi patch made from fabric woven from leftover threads. Chrysanthemums are associated with longevity and rejuvenation in Japanese culture, which gives this one another layer. There are five small hand-repaired areas with sashiko stitching as well.

With the insert, it measures 11" high × 32.5" wide. The cover itself is 11" × 32.5", and I use a 14" × 36" insert here because it gives the pillow a fuller, more sculpted feel.

I backed the antique exterior fabric with new heavyweight cotton canvas for reinforcement, finished the inside edges with overlocking stitches, and hid the zipper in the seam.
