Upstream centers on antique Japanese katazome fabric with carp on both sides, a motif often associated with good fortune. For this pillow, I wanted to keep that imagery front and center.

The indigo-dyed fabric is backed with sturdy canvas, and I finished it with a hidden zipper so the insert can be removed easily.

The pillow measures 33" × 11". I like the way the 34" × 14" down alternative insert gives it a fuller, more elongated presence. The insert has a cotton cover and poly fill.

Scripted is made from beautifully faded antique Japanese tsutsugaki fabric from the early 1900s. What gives this piece its character is the Japanese script across the surface.
