Crusted Crest

Crusted Crest began as four separate tsutsugaki panels that I sewed back together. They’re dyed with bengala iron oxide, which is what first caught my attention. It’s rare to find tsutsugaki panels dyed this way, and the color really drew me in.

I was especially drawn to the tattered areas, particularly around the family crest. The fabric is so worn that I imagine it must have been hung outside for years to reach that level of distress. There’s something about seeing a crest that has weathered that much time. It felt satisfying to bring the four panels back together and let the image read as one again.

I patched areas with naturally dyed green fragments and persimmon-dyed fabrics.

Crusted Crest was made in 2022 and measures 44" wide x 50" high x 2" deep. It's stretched on premium Museo ALU-frame stretcher bars for a clean, simple presentation.
